Go! Highlands Inc have been successful in securing funding through the Australian Government Department of Health Ageing National Suicide Prevention Strategy Community Based Projects Funding. They will be delivering the ‘Building Resilience in the Central Highlands’ project in partnership with the Central Highlands Regional Health Service.

Tasmania is reported as having one of the highest suicide rates in the country at 26% above the National rate with a higher risk attributed to rural and remote areas. As there are no suicide prevention activities currently being delivered in the Central Highlands, all activities and strategies delivered as part of this project will increase the capacity and knowledge of our community, including building resilience and confidence in young people, parents, teachers and the community.

The project will commence in early 2007 and will involve trained and experienced facilitators to deliver workshops and activities with young people, parents of adolescents, teachers, and the community. There will also be the commencement of a mentoring program for young people. The project will also involve employing a project officer one day a week over a twelve month period.

We recently employed Angela Cooper, a local community member to co-ordinate this project. Angela will work one day a week from Ash Cottage. If you would like to find out more about this exciting project or would like to assist in any way please contact Angela, Tracey or Lana on 62872001.
