Quicklinks: National Suicide Prevention Strategy project  | Operation Bus Stop | Community Directory for the Central Highlands

Timeline

2006
September
bulletWe have been actively involved in Communities for Children Project by submitting a tender for the Fun for All strategy which will enable us to run some holiday programs that will create some fun and learning opportunities for children in the 0 to 5 age group and their families.
bulletA grant application has been submitted under the National Suicide Prevention Program which is worth $47,000.00
bulletIn partnership with with Centralink a funding application for $88,000.00 has been submitted to Tas Community Fund for a 8 seater people mover and one locally employed family support worker. This will enable services to be taken to the people or people to the services. This application is a direct result of the community forums held at Ouse earlier in the year and will.

November (two successful grant applications)

bulletSummer Holiday Fun Project – Family fun days will be held in Ellendale, Hamilton and Bothwell through January and February.
bulletOffice of Youth Affairs Grant – to assist young people with the transition from high school to further education and employment.

December

bulletA recent grant application under the National Suicide Prevention Strategy (Australian Department of Health and Ageing) named “Building Resilience in the Central Highlands” has been successful. This grant is worth $47,000.00 to our community and Go! Highlands’s will be managing the funds for this grant and assisting with the management of the project beginning in 2007.

2007
January
bulletGo! Highlands received funding from Aged, Rural and Community Health promotion funding to run some “Summer Holiday Fun Days” in the Central Highlands and we want to thank those volunteers who successfully organized some great fun in their communities.
bulletEllendale’s Family Fun Day was held on the 5th of January with fun activities inside and out. Gumboot throwing, three legged races, egg and spoon races, face painting and Ellendale’s resident wizard, Simon, put on a great science show on the oval while in the hall there was drawing, painting, playdough and stories to tell. For the winners the organizers had done a great job in getting some fabulous prizes and we thank those business’s who donated so generously. A sausage sizzle kept the hunger pangs away.
bulletBothwell’s planned pool party on the 30th of January was a dry affair due to dreadful weather conditions but it did not diminish the fun once over the disappointment. Beach cricket was played with great enthusiasm in the school gym along with pool noodle hockey and zinc cream face painting. The sun safe fashion parade allowed the children to at least look as though they were at the pool on a beautiful day. Icy poles, fruit and a lolly scramble kept the energy levels high.
bulletHamilton’s day was held on the 2nd of January with activities including Cricket with Tas Cricket, more cricket and games with the Police Citizens Youth Club and some clowning around with trick bikes, juggling and balancing. Beading with Steph Kuipers inside was a great success with some beautiful creations made. Popcorn making, play dough and coloring in activities were available for the smaller community members. McHamilton burgers were well received.

All the days were well attended and great fun enabling community members to have a day out in their own community. We will be having more events like these and would really appreciate any suggestions of activities families and children would like to take part in or suggestions of ways to improve family fun day events. These days would not have been as successful without the hard work and enthusiasm of the volunteers who made them happen and we applaud them for having a go and achieving such a great result. If you are interested in being on a committee to ensure future fun days happen please contact us.
